Saturday Wk 1: Too busy to post!

We have a busload of kids here and a boatload of pictures to share with you, if only we can find the time!  The kids are having a ball and hopefully being given some spiritual food as well as physical.  Pray for the stamina of the team as a few of us are under the weather, and the boys cabin last night was up late and then up early so the teens staying there with the kids got little sleep.  Thank you!

Thursday Wk 1: Work Day

Thursday we prepared for the children;,who are coming tomorrow. The paint finally came and the guys got to paint their cabin bright orange. The girls spent the day cleaning and organizing the art room. We enjoyed the wind cooling us down until it turned into a storm, luckily it passed quickly. We all got to go swimming; this time when there was still light. Alex is no longer sick, so she got to take part in all the day's fun events.

Wednesday Wk 1: Rivas

This entry is written by: Ashley, Alex Fogg, Lydia, and Charlotte.

Wednesday was quite an eventful day, except for the Foggs. Unfortunately for Alex, she got sick in the early morning and was unable to take part in the team's adventure. Vicky, being the loving mother she is, stayed with Alex at the camp and took great care of her. Later on, Vicky had a chance to hang with the team and Pat stayed back with Alex.

The original plan was to re-paint the boy's bunk house. However, due to a lack of paint, plans changed, and we were happily surprised to be able to go into Rivas. We all piled into the 16-passenger van and a truck owned by the camp and headed out. When we arrived at the market in Rivas we split up into 3 groups and explored for a while. We reconvened at the van to find out that somebody had attempted to steal one of our truck's tires. Because the truck was being repaired, we didn't have enough seats in the van to travel to the hospital. This situation was remedied by Charlotte, Pat, Ruth, and our additional team members and translators Carrie, Jessica, and Heydi riding in some rickshaw-like vehicles. Charlotte particularly enjoyed riding with Heydi as it was both of their first times in the bicycle taxis.

We arrived at the hospital to deliver some medical supplies, but only Ruth, Tim, Zach, Dave, Lydia, Nate, and Jeremy were able to go in with Geo (our translator and coordinator, pronounced GEE-oh.) While everyone else waited outside we met with the head nurse and gave her all our supplies. She was very sweet and thankful. She then showed us around the hospital, where we saw lots of cats, dogs, and motorcycles in the courtyards and hallways. We then went out to lunch at Tip-Top Chicken.

After lunch we all went to the dump to visit children and try to get them to come to camp. It was really surprising to see how gracious and welcoming all the families were; they let us all go and look in their houses. We visited about four houses and then went back to camp.  We'll post these pictures separately; there are a lot of them.

After a little while, Geo gathered together some kids from his church and organized a soccer game for us to play against them. We were a little nervous because there were so many spectators-- it seemed like the whole town was watching! We played on a small dirt field that had goals made out of sticks.
We won the first game, but lost the second. It was such a fun experience to get to play with the Nicaraguan kids. After the games, we were all very sweaty and dirty. Then we all piled back in the van and headed back to camp, and had dinner. Then we went swimming in the dark!

We're here!

OK, so the ride was a LITTLE bumpy!  Charlotte, Alex F, Ashley, Lydia in the back seat of the van.
Our travels were uneventful if you don't count some roller-coastery turbulence at one point; all our luggage made it through customs OK, and transit to the camp went off without a hitch.  We're enjoying getting to know the staff at Campo Alegria. Ready to go to bed a bit early and get up early and get going.  More later!

Songs in Spanish

I'm putting this on the blog mostly so we have a backup copy if needed, but maybe you'd like to try singing them yourself!

Su bandera sobre mí es amor (His banner over me is love)

Who’s the King of the Jungle?

(x2)

(HOTA; EH; ESSAY; OO; ESSAY;)

Jesús es el Rey de la selva;
Jesús es el Rey del mar;
Jesús es el Rey del universo
Y también Él es mi Rey.

Medley

CHRISTO AMA A LOS NIÑOS
Este mundo es de Cristo
Y a los niños ama Él.
No le importa si tu piel
Roja, blanca o negra es,
Cristo ama a los niños por igual.

Cristo dio su hermosa vida
Por los niños que ama Él.
No le importa si tu piel
Roja, blanca o negra es,
Cristo ama a los niños por igual.

Este mundo es de Cristo
Y a los niños ama Él.

No le importa si tu piel
Roja, blanca o negra es,
Cristo ama a los niños por igual.

No le importa si tu piel
Roja, blanca o negra es,
Cristo ama a los niños por igual.

CRISTO ME AMA
Cristo me ama, yo lo se,
En la biblia, dice que
Los pequeños son de Él,
Y su amor perfecto es.

Sí, Cristo me ama.
Sí, Cristo me ama.
Sí, Cristo me ama.
La biblia dice así.

Sí, Cristo me ama.
Sí, Cristo me ama.
Sí, Cristo me ama.
La bi - blia -- dice -- así.

HE DECIDIDO SEGUIR A CRISTO
He decidido seguir a Cristo,
He decidido amar a Cristo,
He decidido servir a Cristo,
Yo hacia atrás, no vuelvo más.

Si nadie más conmigo viniera.
Si nadie más a Cristo serviera.
Si nadie más a Cristo buscara.
Yo hacia atrás, no vuelvo más.

El mundo atrás yo he dejado.

Coro:

A Tus brazos correré

Nunca cambia Tu eterno amor
Descansamos en Tu eterno amor

From the church bulletin this Sunday

Our Nica 2012 team leaves on Tuesday! We will be serving at Campo Alegría, on the shores of Lake Nicaragua, which serves children from some of the poorest areas of the country. While in Nicaragua we will have opportunity to do work projects at the camp, host two weekend camps for children, bring gifts of school and hospital supplies for those in need in the local community,
and also spend time in the surrounding villages ministering to families and children. Please pray that our final preparations will go smoothly, and for safety as we travel. Pray that we will communicate God’s love to the children in spite of language and culture barriers, and that God would open their hearts to the Gospel. Pray that God would bind our hearts and minds together in one goal, purpose, and vision; and above all, that the name of Jesus would be exalted.

Counting down the days

Our remaining time before climbing on a plane to Nicaragua is no longer being counted in weeks.  It's just days away.  Thanks to incredible organization from our trip leaders, we've had several team meetings to get to know each other, and to plan the trip.  And yet it feels as if we could have used more.

God willing, we will host two children's weekend camps while there.  By hosting, I mean we're responsible for the whole thing!  Planning activities, providing materials, paying for the children to come, caring for the kids ... although, thank goodness, the camp staff are going to plan and manage the food.  So we've spent the weeks in preparation by planning skits, science projects, sports activities, chapel services, etc.  I think we're all feeling it's coming together well, but we're glad we have a couple of days to prepare "in place" at the camp too.

We've each been preparing spiritually as well.  We have a set of 14 devotions that we're working on day by day to prepare our hearts to be knit together as teammates, with 14 other people that we're asking God to turn into family during our trip.  And we're all praying with great expectation to see what He is going to do in Nicaragua while we are there!

Drivers! Blessed drivers!

Four wonderful people have stepped up to drive us to Boston in the wee hours one weekday next week!  We'd like to thank (in alphabetical order):
  • Laura Berman
  • Nelson Fogg
  • Jessie Reynolds
  • Jerry Swift
And also to thank those who lent us their vehicles to carry us and all our many bags of personal and mission luggage down there!

  • the Corbins
  • the Herdons
  • the Swifts
